Also known as Indian fig, the flesh of the prickly pear cactus has proven fat binding abilities. During one 3-month study conducted in Germany, the researchers split their volunteers into two groups. Both groups ate a similar diet, but one group was supplemented with prickly pear before each of their three main meals. The other group was given a placebo. The scientists kept a close record of the amount of fat that was present in the faecal excretions of the 20 volunteers involved, and noted a higher fat content in the faeces taken from the volunteers who received prickly pear cactus.
